National Heritage Students Meeting'25
From Students. For Students.
Let's rethink Heritage in the 21st Century
October 1st, 2nd and 3rd
Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto, Porto
About ENEP
What is ENEP?
The National Meeting of Heritage Students was created by the initiative of the Bachelor's and Master's degree students in Heritage at the University of Évora (to acess the 1st edition of ENEP click HERE). After an inaugural edition in the city of Évora (2023), in 2025 ENEP travels to the city of Porto by the hands of students from the Department of Heritage Sciences and Techniques at FLUP!
Mission
The main objective of the National Meeting of Heritage Students (ENEP) is to promote a privileged space for the exchange of ideas, knowledge and experiences between students, professionals and heritage researchers. We wish to promote the appreciation, preservation and communication of the national heritage in its various aspects – Material, Intangible, Cultural and Natural. We seek to promote constructive dialogue and critical reflection on the challenges and opportunities in the area of heritage, thus contributing to the training of professionals who are more aware and committed to the cultural and natural heritage of our country.
Values
Commitment with Heritage.
We value the importance of preserving and communicating heritage in all its forms. We recognize the potential of heritage in promoting co-creation and inclusion projects and encourage greater awareness and social responsibility in its preservation.
Education and Knowledge.
We believe that education is the key element for raising awareness and mobilizing in favor of heritage. In conjunction with debates, round tables and communications, we promote the dissemination of knowledge through academic and cultural activities closer to local communities.
Inclusion and Diversity.
We advocate for the inclusion of multiple voices and perspectives in the dialogue about and with heritage, respecting and valuing cultural, social and academic diversity.
Colaboration and Partnership.
We encourage collaboration between students, universities, industry professionals and the community in general, understanding that the appreciation of heritage is a collective responsibility that benefits from mutual efforts.
Inovation and Sustentability.
We encourage innovative approaches to heritage management, seeking solutions that, while safeguarding and preserving natural and cultural resources, promote economic and social sustainability strategies for their transmission to future generations.
Registration II ENEP
Heritage is a living inheritance, and therefore depends on its continuous recognition and appreciation, which will dictate its permanence, resignification or loss. Over time, the very concept of heritage undergoes changes, moving from the monument as an element that carries memory and is a legacy between generations, contributing to preserving identities and cultural heritage, to the inclusion of various heritage categories that bear witness to cultural diversity and human action in a given context.
Thus, we are faced with the emergence of new heritage and the resignification/reuse of old ones, leading us to question what heritage is and what it could be (the Noah complex pointed out by Françoise Choay) and how we should approach it. It should be noted that, sometimes, heritage conservation involves assigning new uses, and to this end, assets must be adapted to new realities and habits, also taking into account the urgency of sustainability and the response to problems such as gentrification, touristification, totemism (heritage fetishism) and façadeism. On the other hand, we are alerted to cultural democratization, establishing new bridges between heritage and communities, new ways of communicating and new heritage discourses. Furthermore, digital heritage is highlighted as an emerging category, calling for debate on the means for its safeguarding and the place of artificial intelligence in heritage, also leading to the questioning of heritage virtualization.
Therefore, we will rethink heritage in the 21st century by sharing diverse perspectives. To this end, proposals will be presented within three thematic areas:
New uses for cultural heritage
Democratization of heritage
Digital heritage
